  • The Shape of Nature explores a variety of Woonchul An’s landscape photographs which build upon and deconstruct multiple aspects of the genre. Traditionally, landscape photographs use standard forms of framing and three-dimensional perspective, breaking the subject into a 3 x 3 grid and a foreground, middle distance, and background. An’s photographs playfully push against the tropes that have come to define the look of landscape imagery as he pushes and pulls the perspective, flattening the plane of the image to create works that read more as abstract and painterly than recreations of natural scenes.

  • In his horizon works the subject of the images becomes this infinitely small intersection between the endless sky and the vast Earth. An gives the viewer no distractions as he lengthens the perspective of the image beyond a foreground and a background to encompass the viewer as the sky stretches overhead and the ground underneath. As a result, these works read as color-field paintings crafted by nature and captured by An’s choices of frame, exposure, and editing.

  • While the horizon pieces play with perspective by looking as far into the distance as possible with a focus on the way light can flatten out the image, other of his pieces turn the lens towards the ground and investigate texture, shadow, and scale. The works Moss Garden, Iceland and Thames River, UK explore the textures that surround by closing the frame of the image around moss covered rocks and swirling water. As an antithesis to the horizon works, these pieces uncover the hidden beauty in the world people overlook daily, pulling the foreground of landscape into light.

Alternatively, some of his works such as Taebaek Mountain, Gangwondo, Korea and Sunset Sea, Korea choose to zoom out over vast scales rendering massive mountain ranges, forests, and oceans in the same scale and style as the textures that An finds when looking just past his feet.

  • In addition to the delicate and serene work that he is known for, An also has a penchant for capturing nature in its more chaotic states. Maintaining his style, he has also turned his camera towards the choppy, storm fed seas of the paradisical island of Jeju, dense and gnarled jungles, and the powerful waterfalls of Iceland. While there are definite stylistic differences, An continues to push the boundaries in these 'action' shots as he zooms into the motion that he's capturing and fills the frame with moments of these energetic scenes.
