Flowing Still
EJ Kim Solo Exhibition | 05/29/2025 - 07/05/2025
BLANK SPACE is pleased to present Flowing Still, a solo exhibition by EJ Kim, on view from May 29th to July 5th. The inspiration behind his "FLOW" series draws from intimate sensory encounters: the way light shimmered through torn hanji at his studio window, or the reflective states experienced while gazing at water (mul-meong), fire (bul-meong), or the sparkling surface of a river (yoonseul). These moments are not the conceptual center of his work but serve as poetic reference points—gestures toward the kind of calm, attentive contemplation that his pieces hope to inspire.

THE INSPIRATION
In Kim’s world, light is not merely observed but embodied—alive within the fibers, shadows, and spaces between. His work invites viewers not just to see, but to feel: to dwell in the delicate balance between rhythm and silence, structure and flow. In an age of distraction and noise, Kim offers a rare space for quiet presence—where healing unfolds naturally, through light, material, and mindful attention.

“I believe light and its sensations quietly lead us to peace and restoration.”

THE Process
Working with traditional hanji paper, Kim meticulously dyes, tears, and layers delicate fibers to create textured surfaces that hold and reflect light. His process balances calculated structure with organic disruption—crafting compositions that shift and breathe as the viewer moves, creating a quiet, ever-changing dialogue between material and perception.

THE EXPERIENCE
In this body of work, EJ Kim seeks not merely to depict light, but to embody it—allowing it to dwell within the fibers of his materials and emerge between each tear and shadow. His delicate constructions invite viewers to find quiet comfort in imperfection and to listen for the subtle rhythms that underlie all things. For Kim, healing does not announce itself with force. It glows, it shimmers, it breathes—like light across water. Through these works, he offers a moment of pause, a space where viewers might return, however briefly, to themselves.

“I hope that those who encounter my work find their own sense of beauty
— and in that moment, experience a quiet healing.” -
