Miguel Vallinas

BLANK SPACE is proud to present a solo exhibition of works by Miguel Vallinas, a Spanish photographer known for his surrealist imagery and distinctive visual style. This exhibition features four of his different series which explore the ways in which we construct and feel identity in the world. This is Vallinas’ first exhibition with the gallery and will be live in the viewing room through May 30th, 2021.

  • Working in digital photography, Vallinas’ work explores surrealist impulses and historical references through a very contemporary lens. Key to his work is his incredibly recognizable visual style which isolates the subject in a black void, further isolating them and creating a contrast between the bold color palettes of his subject and the depth of the background. Printed using Lambda digital-c printing, bonded to archival board and sealed with a protective layer of high quality matte resin, the richness of these works comes through beautifully and compliments the incredible detail and intricacy of Vallinas' creativity.

  • Each of Vallinas’ series uses his style to investigate a different aspect of personality by manipulating his ‘human’ subject and transforming them into animals and objects that he has interpreted through them. In his Ceci Nes Pas series, Vallinas completely replaces his subject with an object and builds the image around it. Winking at the historical legacy of the surrealists through his title, Vallinas suggests that aspects of identity are influenced by our choices and decisions, and invites the viewer to reflect on “what actually is, who we think we are, what others think of us, what we want to be, and what we truly are."

  • In his latest series, Suppen, Vallinas turns his eye away from the human subject and towards the world. Focusing on soup and the formalities of the dish, each image repeats a consistent context of a tablecloth, glass, bowl, and spoon. Using these familiar items, Vallinas then builds fantastical scenes within this zone of familiarity and explores the worlds that people build for themselves.

  • In his Segundals Pieles (Second Skin) and Can (Dog) series’, Vallinas turns towards animals and their various characteristics to continue his exploration of personality and individuality. In these two series, the subject is replaced with an animal of Vallinas’ choosing which has a personified character trait based upon its appearance. Combined with his choice of clothing, each image signifies the various faces and personalities that people put on when around others or alone, and signifies the various possibilities and choices that surround everyone daily.
