A Korean contemporary installation artist who transforms elastic thread into perceptual architecture—Hong Sungchul destabilizes vision to reveal the fragile boundaries between presence, identity, and illusion.
Hong Sungchul is an internationally recognized Korean contemporary installation artist whose sculptural environments investigate perception, fragmentation, and the incompleteness of existence. Working at the intersection of sculpture and integrated media, he constructs intricate installations composed of thousands of elastic cords and pixelated units—forming images that appear visually coherent from a distance, yet dissolve into vibration and rupture upon closer encounter.
This perceptual shift lies at the heart of his practice. Hong challenges the stability of what we see, transforming reflection into inquiry and image into uncertainty. His thread-based installations do not merely reproduce form; they construct an unstable optical field where identity flickers and presence becomes provisional. Through this precise yet conceptually rigorous approach, Hong Sungchul has become a defining voice within Korean contemporary installation art and perceptual sculpture on the international stage.
“What appears still carries a perceptual tremor.”
Through vibration, fragmentation, and tactile illusion, Hong Sungchul gives form to the anxiety and beauty of a fractured self.
Hong Sungchul received his BFA and MFA in Sculpture from Hongik University before earning an MFA in Integrated Media from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), one of the leading institutions for experimental contemporary practice.
His works are held in major institutional collections including the Seoul Museum of Art, Kumho Museum of Art, Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Boghossian Foundation in Belgium, affirming his presence within both Korean contemporary art and the global art landscape.
Among his most recognized commissions is the large-scale Bill Bowerman Installation, permanently installed at the LeBron James Innovation Center at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. The project garnered international attention for its innovative integration of contemporary installation art and architectural space, demonstrating Hong’s ability to bridge conceptual sculpture with global cultural platforms.
Exhibited across Asia, Europe, and the United States, Hong Sungchul continues to expand the dialogue between perception, materiality, and spatial experience—positioning his work at the forefront of contemporary installation art.
